Is There a Market?
A simple mistake that a lot of first timers make, is just assuming that people will want to visit their website. You might have a great topic that you find really interesting and can write about for hours, but not that many people out there care about it and so it doesn’t get traffic.
When people search for something they want online, they type in keywords and keyword phrases into search engines like google. If I was looking for a place to buy a battery for my car, I would type in “car batteries”.
To succeed with your topic, you need:
- Enough people searching for info about it
- Enough products about the topic, you can sell
Keywords
To find out if there is a large enough number of people searching for a topic that I hope to create a website about, I use the website www.freekeywords.wordtracker.com
It’s a free service, and will give the average number of searches a keyword phrase gets. Plus it gives you top 100 related keyword phrases and the number of searches they get.
So, if you look below I’ve carried on with the topic of Body Language.

And again, if you look below it shows the average searches. And it also gives me a list of related phrases.

It turns out that Body Language receives an average of 5,379 searches per day. This is a great number. Anything above 1,500 a day is easily enough people.
Use the keyword tool to go through your favourite topic choices in the list you created in the Finding a Topic section. Hopefully you should still have a few left after your keyword exercise.
Are There Products to Promote?
To actually make money online with a website you need to sell products. These don’t have to be your products. You can promote other peoples products and earn a commission. This is called Affiliate Marketing. I go into detail on how this works in the Affiliate Marketing Section.
For when we’re finding a topic to create a website on, we need to know if there are actually people out there who have a product to sell, which we can promote.
The website I use to find products to promote is www.clickbank.com. Clickbank is sort of like a middle man between people who create products and people who promote them.
When you get to the clickbank homepage you need to click on the “marketplace” icon at the top of the screen. (see below).

You can then type in your niche from your topic list. Mine is Body Language. I haven’t found lots of products on body language, but I’ve found more than five. For me this would just be enough. (there are other companies as well as clickbank that can also be used).

If you look at the part below one of the products where it says “Total $/sale: $25.78” that is how much commission you will make for every sale you refer to them. So imagine if you managed to push 100 people into buying that product. That would make you $2,500!! It’s easier said than done but it can be done…. All the time!
Again, you should be doing this with more than one niche. Don’t be deterred if a lot of them aren’t getting the traffic or the products. You will find one.
Don’t just settle for something that doesn’t have enough traffic or products. It won’t work and you’ll just end up wasting your time creating a website that doesn’t earn.
Once you think you’ve found your niche that you will create your website around, you’re ready to move on to the next section.
